At Walking Mountains Science Center, we provide locals and visitors from pre-k to gray with opportunities to explore nature, gain a scientific understanding, and learn about the many wonders of our mountain environment through natural science and sustainability programs. We envision a future where everyone in the community understands the science of nature and is inspired to take action as an environmental steward. Our mission is "to awaken a sense of wonder and inspire environmental stewardship and sustainability through natural science education."
We value stewardship, community, innovation, learning and leadership. These values help to shape a strong culture of collaboration, respect, professional development, creativity, celebration and fun! We feel a sense of belonging to something bigger and believe that the work we do will make a difference, creating a positive impact in our community, the lives of our participants and the world around us.
Between our Youth, Community, and Sustainability Programs, Walking Mountain offers programing for early childhood, K-12 students, families, adults, and businesses. Through our summer camps, school programs, STEM Curiosity Lab, Girls in Science, High School Environmental Leadership programs, and summer internship opportunities, there are plenty of opportunities for specifically youth and young adults to engage with science and nature while working in and for the environment.
Opportunity Examples
The Natural Resource Internship for high school students is a partnership with the National Forest Foundation and the United States Forest Service (USFS). Interns will earn college credit and be paid a weekly stipend to conduct conservation field work for the USFS and gain experience collecting data, restoring trails and habitat, removing invasive species, and inventorying trout populations.
Walking Mountains Science Center’s Summer Science Camps allow children to experience the wild places of the Eagle Valley while nurturing their connection to the natural world through daily exploration of local trails. Campers investigate principles of ecology and develop an understanding of scientific concepts through fun, adventure, experiments, and exploration.
The Pathways Environmental Leadership Class and Internship is open to Battle Mountain High School Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors as a part of the Eagle Valley Outdoor Movement. Students will participate in weekly field trips to learn about organizations in our county that work in and for the environment to reduce our impact on our local resources. At the end of the semester, each student interviews and is placed at a PAID summer internship at one of the organizations visited during weekly field trips.
